Anne Gottlieb Artist Statement Primarily self-taught, I’ve been fortunate to study with a number of masters: portrait painting in San Francisco with the well regarded Bob Gerbracht, color with the incomparable Mike Linstrom, and landscape painting with a number of nationally known painters, including Ted Goerschner, Charles Sovek, and Matt Smith. While I have won several awards for my portraits, my primary focus today is on landscape painting with an eye to capturing the “character” or essence of the landscape—the telling detail that differentiates one from the other—while standing in the deep divide between representation and abstract.I often start out painting plein air, most often in the company of an informal group devoted to painting nature. Plein air painters feed off their own direct response to nature: its infinite variety, its changing seasons, the sense it gives you of being part of something larger than yourself. But there’s no place like the comfort of the studio to make the transition from responding to nature to producing art. Once there, the painting takes on a life of its own where texture and color coolly refute the seduction of reality to play the dominant role. More recently I have been linking texture and color with primitive symbols that generate a deep emotional response, such as in my African Afternoon series. My work can be seen at Art Etc, in group shows throughout the year at Avenue 9 Gallery, the Sally Dimas Gallery, and the Chico Art Center, and at my own studio. |
