Claudia Schwartz Artist Statement have always been fascinated with the making of art, which prompted my return to college in my third decade, attending CSU, Chico as an Art Studio major. My emphasis was in painting and fiber arts, and I discovered the appeal of the intersecting discipline of art history. I eventually graduated with a BA, a double major in Art Studio and Art History. While working in stained glass, I found that to be able to paint on glass and have permanency, the painted glass needed to be fired in a kiln. After attending a glass fusing conference to learn these skills, I discovered my love of “Hot Glass.”I have been working in kiln-formed fused art glass for over 12 years, and I continue to be fascinated by it. A vital part of my artwork is reflected in the mixing and juxtaposition of vibrant colors, and the diffusion and refraction of light within the jewel-like dichroic glass. I enjoy the contrast of the plasticity of the hot glass and its final solidity when cool. Art glass objects, kiln-cast glass, fused glass jewelry with my sterling silver work, and architectural glass are all part of my artwork. My jewelry holds a special attraction for me: I enjoy the sensuousness of the colors, the twining of the silver, and the way the glass becomes warmed by the body heat of the wearer. I also teach introductory fused glass art classes with my partner, glass artist David Shimamoto, through our Fire2Fuse Studios in Chico, California (www.Fire2Fuse.com). My work can currently be seen at the Avenue 9 Art Gallery, where I am a founding member of the art guild, at the 8th & Main Antique Center, and at Fire2Fuse Studios. |
