Dolores Mitchell Artist Statement At 76, I have a heightened awareness of parallels between my life and cycles of growth, decay, and renewal in the larger world. My art investigates time’s transformative power as the hours and the seasons revolve. My paintings begin with sketches of a scene or object stimulated an intense emotional reaction. In my studio, guided more by intuition than reason, I heighten colors, exaggerate shapes, and invent new elements. As I apply oil, watercolor, or pastel in many layers, I draw inspiration from each medium’s nature.I first painted as a teen at Chicago Art Institute classes. At UCLA, I studied painting and received a PhD in Art History. Retirement after teaching Art History at CSUC for three decades has allowed me to devote my energies to painting. My work can be seen at Avenue 9 Gallery, where I am a founding member of the art guild, and at individual and group shows in a variety of locations throughout the year. |
