Paul Feldhaus Artist Statement Paul A. Feldhaus (1926 – 2005) started the art department at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL in 1952 where he took it from one man to a department of five in 19 years before joining the printmaking department at CSU Chico. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1991. Regionalist midwest influence of Ohio and Illinois is reflected in early work depicting facades, landscapes, and machinery in watercolors, woodcuts, etchings, engravings, and lithographs. He always had a continuing thread of figurative work.As an ornithologist he and his family travelled extensively in the United States, Canada, Europe, Central America, the Pribiloff Islands, Bathurst Inlet(north of the Arctic Circle), South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia observing birds, which inspired many prints. The wart hog series was created in response to his own dictum that art can be achieved with almost any kind of object or idea at hand. Many of his prints are intended to be humorous, but sometimes they address serious issues. From a 1994 artist’s statement accompanying a one-man exhibit at CSU Chico, he says, “In retrospect, there is unity of both structure and content that can be detected in all these pieces.” He has exhibited internationally, locally, and in group and one man traveling exhibits throughout the United States. His work is included in many public and private collections. |
