Michael Mulcahy Artist Statement I work with acrylic paint on canvas, employing several styles that range from hard-edge pop to “more painterly” figure and landscape studies. I always begin with a “real” image that is then abstracted in some way. Because acrylic is a water-based medium it is possible to work very fast; yet due to its translucency it is often necessary to build up many layers to achieve adequate depth. There is an inherent tension in the process; often my colors are mixed directly on the canvas with the brush to achieve serendipity and surprise. All my work is tied together by a love of brilliant color. |
