Phyllis Cullen Artist Statement
I am a physician as well as an artist, practiced in the art of healing and caring for the most fragile of patients: those in chronic pain and those in third-world countries without our wonderful technology and resources. My daily contact with my patients, whose bodies and minds I cherish and nurture, informs and inspires my desire to create, and I delight in sharing my art with them.I am a visual artist working in a number of mediums: fiber arts, mixed media, oils, watercolors, drawings, and photography. I aspire to reflect the beauty around us and share my art with the fragile soul within each of us, which needs color and light.I have studied oil painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at the School of Color in Sacramento with Susan Sarback. Locally, I teach workshops in art quilting. My quilts have won a number of awards at international quilt shows and are in collections all over the world. My art can be seen at Avenue 9, where I am a founding member of the art guild, and in group shows at the Chico Art Center. The walls of my clinic also serve as my gallery—as do the walls of my family and friends!
