Rachelle Stangeland
I create these landscapes in meditation, to honor the place where I am from.
These landscapes create as well, feelings of joy and a lust for the ever-changing seasons.
They honor my role as an artist, one who lives deeply. I make my pictures with pastel and paint on textured surfaces and in buried layers. I use my fingers and brushes to scratch and rub open the sweetness of my life.Exploring the back roads here in the valley by motorcycle with my companion and my city park on foot, nature washes over me like a gentle wave, and fills me with a sense of drama and euphoria. The city park makes me feel hushed with the noble trees towering above, the sensuous solitude, the river’s reflection, and the faces of houses looking in. On the rural back roads, my eyes run wild in the openness of the valley hills, through the casual fence lines to greet an occasional tree. Spotting the silhouettes of birds and animals dotting the landscape, I feel reassured by the sheer vastness of the natural world. The valley has known me my whole life.
The sky is a mirror.
These landscapes knock gently and swallow my time like an unexpected visitor I am happy to see.BiographyRachelle Stangeland is a native Californian, born in 1972.
