Richard Whitehead Artist Statement
My art is a modern look at relationships of aesthetics, spirituality and artistic vision. Of course, the first impression of my artwork is a visual one. Vision conveys beauty and meaning. Is the work visually compelling, and how so? There are different kinds of attractions and beauty ranges from ethereal to grotesque. Like a flower to a bee, the work must physically attract a viewer. Principles of vision have a lot to do with artwork. Things appear the way they do because of natural and culturally developed principles. Rules of vision dictate balance and beauty according to learned responses. An artist uses visual props to impart mood and relevance. Strength, weakness and passion all have root in the manner of the artwork. A “picture” is not necessary for artwork to have meaning. My work presents a point of view that is enhanced by visual aesthetics in order to communicate on an intuitive level an idea from my world vision to the observer.
