“When I was a high school student in Vermillion, South Dakota, our class took a field trip to the state capital in Pierre. There I heard the legend of the “blue tiles” placed in the Terrazzo floors by the tile setters from Italy. That story stays with me. Since that day, I am drawn to mosaics in all genres.”
“As a mosaic artist, my choice of material is broken pottery that I hand cut, including plates, platters, cups, and bowls. The bulk of my inventory is donated. I value the opportunity this medium affords me to re-purpose an otherwise disposed resource. The unorthodox shapes and contours add a relief dimension to my work.” – Gwen Nelson
With no formal training, Gwen Nelson began teaching herself the process of creating mosaics in 1983. Initially, she creased three-dimensional pieces for her garden. Through extensive research and experimentation, she acquired the skills to move forward with confidence into the evolutionary process of creating mosaics as an artist.
